It’s all well and good having a great website, but if no one is visiting it, it’s not serving its purpose. Paying attention to how your website ranks in search engines such as Google will significantly increase the size of your website’s audience, which will then lead to more work for your business. Let’s take a look at why SEO is important from ranking well for websites for trades…
What is SEO?
If you are doing research about websites for tradesmen, you will no doubt have come across the very important topic that is SEO. SEO, or search engine optimisation, is the things you do so that your website ranks highly in search engines such as Google.
How do you do it?
SEO can be extremely complex and is constantly evolving. Don’t expect to wave a magic wand and be on the 1st page of Google the following day. With that in mind, here are some of the basics of achieving SEO. Search engines like Google now actively penalise websites that are not mobile friendly. In this day and age, there is really no excuse to have a website that is not compatible on a mobile phone. You will also want to spend some time doing some keyword research. Think of what homeowners in your area are searching for on websites like Google. If you are a heating engineer, don’t expect to rank nationally when someone types in ‘boilers’ into Google. Instead, think of specific jobs you do and specific areas your cover (e.g. Digbeth boiler replacements). When you have decided on the keywords you will use, you will need to build your website around these keywords. Include these keywords in your website’s title & alt text. Try to strike a good balance so that both real people and search engines can read through your website’s content. Sometimes it is easy to get lost in this process so that is why this is something we do for all of the websites for trades we build.

Another key factor in how your website will rank in search engines is how quickly its pages load. While we always try and encourage trades to upload high quality images, don’t do this at the expense of how your website runs. Search engines will punish you if your pages aren’t responsive.
One of the most effective ways in which you can achieve SEO is by having links to your website featured on other websites. One way of doing this would be to write a guest blog that is featured on a reputable website. For a trade professional, this may include safety or general advice related to your trade. People aren’t expecting for you to give away trade secrets, but rather pass on some good and simple advice. Keep in mind, when selecting the websites that will link back to your own, think quality over quantity.
